Established in 1962 as a support structure for teaching and research of the Istituto Superiore di Scienze Sociali (which became the first Faculty of Sociology in Italy in 1972), the Library of the University of Trento, dedicated to Marcello Boldrini, has grown  following the evolution of the University. The most substantial developments can be recorded with the establishment of new Faculties in 1972, when Sociology was joined by the Faculty of Sciences, in 1973 with the opening of Economics and subsequently in 1984 and 1985, when the Faculties of Letters and Philosophy, Law and Engineering were also added. Another important enrichment occurred in 2004, with the creation of the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences, the first in Italy.
In 1984 the Library joined the Catalogo Bibliografico Trentino and later the Sistema Bibliotecario Trentino, thus proposing itself as a highly specialized bibliographic and cultural centre, open not only to students and teachers of the University, but also to the entire local community.
