What are databeses and what they are used for

Databases are archives of information organised in such a way that they can be retrieved using search specifications. UniTrento Libraries subscribe to about 100 databases; many of them are bibliographic databases (containing bibliographic data and abstracts of journal articles, book, conference proceedings, etc) but there are also factual ones (providing judgments, laws, statistics, patents, economic and financial data, chemical and physical properties, etc.)
Most of the documents contained in the databases are in english and from Anglo-American area.

By searching databases it is possible to:

  • identify which publications exist on a specific topic
  • know what a particular author has published
  • check for an uncertain or incomplete bibliographic citation
  • find data (legislation, statistical data, etc)
